It’s been a long and winding road leading up to the release of Hamilton band, The Rest‘s new album, SEESAW. The record has been cursed with several misfortunes and the story of its release sounds more like a drama filled novel than that of an advancing of an indie album. It’s been 3 years in the making, with death, lose, and mystery, but the album finally has the official release date of June 19th, 2012.

The band is releasing a song every week leading up to the official release date. I can ensure you that it’s worth the wait. It has hints of Radiohead and Sigur Ros, but still stands on it’s own as original. The album is angelic, melodically soothing, with punches of polished grit and is practically a journey for the ears. Of course every ear is different and it may not be everyones cup o’ tea. However some album stand outs include ‘Always On My Mind’,  ‘John Houston’, and ‘Young And Innocent’ (If I had to choose, because the entire album is good).

You can listen to the tracks below and you can also download selected songs for free!

The Rest are a experimental pop band from Hamilton, Ontario. Last year I had written a post about their 10 track album, SEESAW, being released at some point in 2011. It’s been 5 months, but after some delays, crashed hard drives, lost songs, and stress, the album is finally set for release for early 2012.

To hold fans over until then, they’ve released a double A-side, Always On My Mind/The Last Day, which is available for free on their Bandcamp. You can also listen to it below.

The first track ‘Always On My Mind’ catches your attention right off the bat with elegant vocals, strong yet dreamy guitars and electronic drum beats. Meanwhile ‘The Last Day’ is filled with Thom Yorke/Sigur Ros-esque falsetto, light guitar and marching drums that takes you into a dream like state.

If you like what you hear, you can pre-order SEESAW on special edition vinyl. Limited to 300 it comes on blue vinyl, with a hand written note about the songs and/or recording and includes a CD with cover painted by the band themselves. Check them out!

Making their debut in the Ontario music scene is the indie-folk duo from Burlington/Grimsby, Ontario, Folding Colour. The band  is made up of good friends of mine, David Hearn on guitar, banjo, organ bass, and vocals, and Jill Whitehead on percussion.

Their sound is refreshing compared to the typical heavy metal, cover, and rock bands that are normally produced from Grimsby (who has produced nothing big or mainstream) and Burlington (Finger Eleven, etc…). Although they’re only a duo, they have quite the large sound. Jill keeps the beat with unique, yet simple drums, while Dave plays guitar (or banjo), sings and plays bass…with his feet!

They just recently recorded their debut EP, Green Tree, which is available for free here.

They’re currently booking  shows throughout Hamilton, Toronto, and other parts of Ontario. They’re also planning a mini tour across Canada in June. Expect to hear more from these guys!

Check them out on twitter too @foldingcolour, and don’t forget to download their EP!!! It’s free, you can’t go wrong: foldingcolour.bandcamp.com

disco_ball_largeDynasty Electric is a Brooklyn-based  art-pop band who labels themselves as ‘Blondie on Acid’. Dynasty Electric is made up of multi-instrumentalist Seth Misterka (who’s worked with such acts as Hot Chip) and Jennifer DeVeau (who as a teen toured with her all girl Beatles cover band).

The two met at a local bar where Jennifer bar-tended. Seth struck up a conversation with Jennifer after his scheduled date was a no show. The two hit it off immediately and Seth asked Jennifer to join his band. Dynasty Electric was born soon there after.

The band has toured across Canada, United States, Japan and Taiwan. They’ve been featured on television stations such as MTV2 , Much Music, and in photo spreads in Zoo Magazine and Italian Voque.

Currently they have a new EP, entitled Burning, coming out April of this year. The 6 track EP is full of catchy riffs, danceable beats, and energetic songs.

With their energetic live show, catchy songs, and underground following they’re bound to make a splash in 2009. Atop of their new EP, they also have more songs recorded that will be released by the end of the year in an LP. Keep your eyes open for these guys.

young-rival-epIt’s Friday therefore there’s a new Song Of The Week. This weeks song comes from Young Rival from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Young Rival has a poppy and psychedelic sound that blends 1960’s pop music with today’s alternative sounds. They’re like Velvet Underground with punches of The Strokes.

They have a new self-titled EP containing 6 songs, including the song linked below. Take a listen, download the track, buy the EP, and enjoy:
